Remote Key Fob Repair
Modern vehicles come with remote controls that can be used to lock, unlock and start the vehicle. However, as with any piece of high-tech equipment it isn't without issues.
These are usually very easy to repair. It can be as simple as resetting the device, which you should be able do by following the instructions for resetting in the manual of your owner.
Check the Battery
The battery inside a key fob powers the remote control function. The battery is a tiny piece of equipment that has to be replaced regularly in order to maintain the function of the device. There are many other reasons your key fob may not be functioning, aside from the battery. This could be due to physical damage, water exposure or internal component failure. If your key fob has stopped functioning then replace the battery.
Ensure you have the correct size battery. Almost all modern key fobs are powered by the CR2032 CR2032 battery, which is a standard three-volt unit that's easily available at many stores. The majority of these batteries are engraved with the size on one of the fob's edges. You can determine the type of battery your vehicle requires by searching for the brand name.
Take your key fob apart carefully and remove the current battery. Take a photograph of the inside of your fob to make sure you put it back together correctly. This simple action can save you from having to purchase a replacement fob if you make an error while making it.
Some key fobs also have a mechanical backup key known as an emergency blade. This key blade is located inside the key fob and allows you to unlock the driver's door of your vehicle in the event that the remote control fails. To open the blade of the key, find the notch in the middle of your fob. The notch is usually a circle hidden by the plastic casing of the fob.
If you're looking to be extra cautious, you can utilize a multimeter for checking the voltage of the battery. Most modern key fobs come with an voltmeter in their casings. However, you can also get a multimeter for a couple of dollars at many hardware stores. In general, the battery should read 3.0 volts and higher. A reading below that level could indicate a battery in its last stages and should be replaced immediately.
Check the Buttons
They may appear to be sophisticated, luxurious convenience items but car key fobs aren't impervious to destruction. Remotes can stop functioning after a period of time, especially when they are used frequently or have been subjected to physical abuse. Fortunately, a majority of the time it can be easy to diagnose and fix the issue with remote key fobs, and changing the battery is usually all that is required.
Modern car key fobs come with multiple buttons that perform different functions. For example they can unlock and lock the doors as well as activate the panic button, and even open the trunk. When the button is pressed, the fob sends the radio signal using the code that is interpreted by a receiver located inside the car. The good thing is that a key fob can often be kept from a cliff by drying it thoroughly and following a few easy steps.
The first step is to ensure that the buttons are working properly. This usually means removing the buttons, cleaning them and reassembling them. If the buttons aren't working or don't come in, it might be the time to replace your remote.
You should also check the case to make sure there is nothing that could be affecting the operation of the key fob. Utilize tweezers to remove the case and take out the battery, but do not disassemble the circuit board or antennas. If you disturb the circuits that keep your key fob programmed, you will need to visit an Interstate All Battery Center or dealer to reprogram it.
After you've removed and replaced the battery It's an ideal idea to dry the fob by putting it in a plastic bag filled with silica gel or other desiccating agent. This will help prevent any future issues with moisture and will make your key fob more durable.
If the fob doesn't work, you can visit a dealership, or an independent shop that is focused on the model and make of your vehicle. They can reprogram the key fob for your vehicle and hopefully restore it to full functionality.

Check the Connections
Occasionally your key fob may simply stop working, even though it's still programmed to your vehicle. It could be due to a number of factors such as damaged contacts on the battery or buttons. You may be able fix the issue yourself by performing a simple maintenance.
You should first check that your backup remote is capable of locking and unlocking the doors of your car. If it can, then you probably have problems with your primary remote. If you aren't able to, it's time to try replacing the battery in the backup remote.
Before you replace the battery, it's recommended to take off the key fob and do a visual inspection of the circuit board. Make sure there aren't any cracks in the solder joints. After you've finished you can replace your key fob battery and rebuild it.
Once you've replaced the battery and reassembled your key fob, it's time to test the connection to your vehicle. Put a flathead mini screwdriver into the notch on the bottom of the key fob. You can then pry apart the two halves of your key fob and remove the circuitboard gently. Make sure to insert a brand new CR 2032 3V battery, making sure that it's placed with the negative side facing down. After you've inserted the circuit board, rebuild the key fob and try again.
If this doesn't resolve the issue, you might have a more serious issue. In this situation, you will need to call your dealer or an independent service shop that specializes in the model of the car you own. They can diagnose the issue using a radio-frequency tester, an instrument that determines if your key fob transmits signals to the car's computer.
